Dressing Up Our IKEA Cabinets with Nieu Cabinet Doors : My Experience

Nieu Cabinet Doors provided me with a discount on the doors for this project. As always, all opinions are my own.

We reached a huge milestone in this colossal kitchen reno project because all of the cabinet doors are installed – thank heavens! Even though getting counters and the sink installed a few weeks ago finally gave us a functional kitchen, having closed cabinet storage makes such a big difference in how the kitchen feels. Plus, I was able to move all of our kitchen items back in – now everyone has more than one fork again!

I wanted to dress up these IKEA cabinet boxes with high quality doors so they look and feel high end and let me tell you, these doors delivered! I chose to work with Nieu Cabinet Doors. They fit seamlessly onto the IKEA boxes that we installed and am so happy with the finish.

Nieu Cabinet Doors will custom paint almost any color you want on your doors so you don’t have to go with a standard option if you don’t want to, but I figured it was worth looking through their standard options. I wanted a soft, warm gray and their Brightly Beige color was almost identical to the paint chip I had selected, so that’s the color I ended up going with.

I wanted a simple shaker style front and after looking through their extensive options and ordering a couple sample doors, the Slim Shaker style was perfect. As I was making my decision of which brand I wanted to use to order my doors through, I found that some of them use a thermofoil wrap, which I didn’t love the feel of. I really like that these doors are painted and sealed instead of wrapped!

Working with the Nieu Cabinet Door team was so easy – I sent them my IKEA plans and explained the ways in which I was customizing it further (like the custom size drawer above the trash pullout) and they sent me their planned production list. Every door and drawer front arrived just as planned and fit perfectly!

I customized my tallest uppers to be glass front (you do have to install the glass yourself, but it’s so easy! I’ll show you how soon) and my tower cabinet doors to be glass front with mullions. I keep looking at those tallest uppers wishing I had added mullions to them as well, but I’m going to finish the rest of the kitchen before making a decision on whether or not to add them there or not.

This was my first time redoing a kitchen and not having to paint the doors. Honestly, it was so nice to have that off my plate this time around! Once they arrived, I just had to snap the hinges into place and install them. What a dream!

Now onto hardware, which just came in the mail today (!!!), and then, hood vent, backsplash, and a few finishing touches like the spice rack pullout I’m planning in that empty space between cabinets, some floating shelves, and a window shade. It still sounds (and kind of feels) like a lot, but I also see all of the work that I’ve done so far and feel encouraged. I’m pretty sure we’re in the back half of the project!

  1. Kitchen looks great! Have you experienced any paint chipping on cabinets? We painted ours years ago and they chipped so have just been nervous to have painted/coated cabinets again but they look so great.
